UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas offers Graduate
Programs in the biomedical sciences. The Division of
Cell and Molecular Biology encompasses eight research
training programs leading to Ph.D. degrees in the basic
biomedical sciences. 220 participating faculty offer
doctoral training in the following areas: Biological
Chemistry, Cell Regulation, Genetics and Development,
Immunology, Integrative Biology, Molecular Biophysics,
Molecular Microbiology and Neuroscience. Additionally,
training programs in Chemical Biology, Computational
Biology, and Pharmacology are available. Prospective
students apply to the Division of Cell and Molecular
Biology rather than to the individual graduate programs.
Once accepted at UT Southwestern, our first year students
take a yearlong core course covering major themes in
modern biology. During that first year they also explore
potential research areas by participating in three research
rotations. Toward the end of the first year each student
chooses a research topic and mentor and joins one of
the eight programs in which their graduate studies will
be completed. Each program offers advanced coursework,
taken during the second year of study to provide more
in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of the research
area. At the end of their second year, students take
qualifying exams, form dissertation committees and are
admitted into candidacy. The remainder of their time
is spent focused on their individual research projects.
Our students average 5 and ½ years to complete
their Ph.D. degrees. Graduate students at UT Southwestern
receive nationally competitive stipends throughout the
duration of their graduate career. The current base
stipend for our incoming students is $22,000/year. In
addition, we pay all tuition, student services, and
insurance expenses.
In the past few years UT Southwestern Medical Center
has emerged as one of the top ten biomedical research
institutions in the country, based on research grant
support to basic science faculty. Our faculty includes
four Nobel laureates and fifteen members of the National
Academy of Sciences. UT Southwestern has excellent research
facilities, including an expanding new research campus
and provides a rich, scholarly environment for graduate
study. In 2002 US News ranked UT Southwestern as 14th
in the US amongst institutions that grant PhD degrees
in the biological sciences. More recently, Science Watch,
which ranks research institutions in six specific scientific
disciplines, ranked UT Southwestern in the top 10 in
the country in four of the six disciplines.
Detailed information about our university and our graduate
programs can be found at www.utsouthwestern.edu/gradschool.
Our priority application deadline for Fall 2005 is Jan
5th, 2005. Further information can be obtained by contact

The Division of Biological Sciences (BSD) at The University
of Chicago is committed to fostering diversity in the
scientific training of students. Our faculty work with
each student to tailor the academic program to maximize
his/her potential and achieve his/her career goal.
In the last few years, there has been a trend in universities
around the country to move toward an interdisciplinary
approach to graduate study in the biological sciences,
away from strict separations of disciplines and toward
interdisciplinary study. Recently, the Division of the
Biological Sciences decided to make interdisciplinary
study even easier for graduate students. Degree-granting
units (called Departments or Committees) with closely
linked research programs have grouped together in clusters
with a common admissions procedure and a common core
curriculum. The Cluster system enables these programs
to integrate faculty, coursework, research programs,
training programs, and seminars/symposia. The result
for graduate students is an integrated and flexible
course of study. For postdoctoral trainees and faculty,
the interdisciplinary nature of the Cluster provides
extensive opportunity for interaction and collaboration.
There are four clusters:
Biomedical Sciences, which includes the Department
of Pathology with the Committees on Cancer Biology,
Molecular Metabolism & Nutrition, Immunology, and
Microbiology;
Molecular Biosciences, which includes the Departments
of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Human Genetics,
and Molecular Genetics & Cell Biology, along with
the Committees on Genetics and Developmental Biology;
Neurobiology, Pharmacology, & Physiology, which
includes the Department of Neurobiology, Pharmacology
& Physiology as well as the Committees on Cell Physiology,
Neurobiology and Computational Neuroscience;
Darwinian Sciences, which includes the Departments
of Ecology & Evolution and Organismal Biology &
Anatomy, with the Committee on Evolutionary Biology.
In addition to the Clusters described above, the University
of Chicago Biological Sciences Division also offers
degrees in Medical Physics, Health Studies (M.S. only),
and Ophthalmology & Visual Science. The Division
also sponsors a Summer Research Program for Undergraduate
scholars, as well as The PREP, a Post-Baccalaureate
Research Education Program for underrepresented minorities.
In Fall 2004, over 85 students matriculated. The incoming
class was made up of more than 50% women and 8% minority
students, exemplifying our commitment to increasing
diversity in the sciences. The University of Chicago
is located in Hyde Park, a distinctive south-side Chicago
neighborhood that is home to a majority of University
faculty, students, and staff. Hyde Park is situated
about seven miles (15 minutes) south of Chicago's downtown
business district, commonly referred to as "The
Loop."
Details on all of these programs can be found at our
Web site:
http://gradprogram.bsd.uchicago.edu/.
