December 2004 (Issue I)

"Whoever you are, there is some younger person who thinks you are perfect. There is some work that will never be done if you don't do it. There is someone who would miss you if you were gone. There is a place that you alone can fill."

Dear Ventures Scholars,

The semester is nearing an end and possibly you are considering changing your major. Whatever you do, please make sure you continue your pursuit of a math- or science-related career. Our country is facing a serious shortage of young adults entering the fields of science and mathematics. This is especially true for underrepresented students (Blacks, Hispanics, and American Indians). In the years ahead, underrepresented students will constitute a growing population within the pool of students from which a highly skilled workforce will be drawn. If you feel that you didn’t do as well as expected this semester, take time to speak with your advisor. Your advisor can provide you with good advice and an action plan to help you improve study strategies.

  • "Undertake something that is difficult; it will do you good. Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.”
    - Ronald E. Osborn
  • "Take heart again; put your dismal fears away. One day, who knows? Even these hardships will be grand things to look back on.” - Virgil
  • Please make sure you find the time to learn about internship opportunities. You will need to include these experiences on your resume. Every e-newsletter includes links to internship opportunities. Let us know if you’d like us to help you learn about internship opportunities in specific career areas.

Take care and let us know if you have any questions!

    Sincerely,

    Bioinformatics

Most biologists talk about "doing bioinformatics" when they use computers to store, retrieve, analyze or predict the composition or the structure of biomolecules. As computers become more powerful you could probably add simulate to this list of bioinformatics verbs. "Biomolecules" include your genetic material---nucleic acids---and the products of your genes: proteins. These are the concerns of "classical" bioinformatics, dealing primarily with sequence analysis. (Scroll to the middle of the page for information.)

    Your Nursing Career

Federal figures project that if current trends continue, the shortage of RNs will continue to grow throughout the next 20 years. By 2020, 808,416 jobs for full-time-equivalent RNs are expected to go unfilled nationwide, according to the National Center for Workforce Analysis, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. But already, in an expanding number of markets, hospitals and other employers are struggling to meet the rising demand for RN care and have stepped up recruitment.
