March 2005 (Issue II)

"If you live on this land, and you have ancestors sleeping in this land, I believe that makes you a native to this land. It has nothing to do with the color of your skin. I was not raised to look at people racially. What I was taught is that we're flowers in the Great Spirit's garden. We share a common root, and the root is Mother Earth."

Dear Ventures Scholar,

A special thanks to the Ventures Scholars who are participating in the spring E-Buddy Program. This spring, 526 high school Ventures Scholars (seniors) and 375 undergraduate Ventures Scholars have requested to participate in the program. The Program will begin on March 31, 2005.

In the near future, we'll be asking undergraduate Ventures Scholars to complete a short questionnaire. This will help us learn about you and the services you need to help you link to information, resources and opportunities. Please remember to take a few moments to complete the questionnaire!

By the way, if you'd like us to include information about topics not already covered in the e-newsletter, just email webmaster@ventures.org with your suggestions!

Take care.

On Being A Scientist: Responsible Conduct In Research

Anyone who has experienced the childlike wonder evoked by observing or understanding something that no one has ever observed or understood before will recognize McClintock's enthusiasm. The pursuit of that experience is one of the forces that keep researchers rooted to their laboratory benches, climbing through the undergrowth of a sweltering jungle, or following the threads of a difficult theoretical problem. To succeed in research is a personal triumph that earns and deserves individual recognition. But it is also a communal achievement, for in learning something new the discoverer both draws on and contributes to the body of knowledge held in common by all scientists.

Article on Considering Graduate School

One of the decisions many college students struggle with is whether or not to go to graduate school right after college. Many students believe that furthering their education will help improve their market value in the workplace, while others desire to attend graduate school to avoid entering the real world. Throughout my four years at Missouri I grappled with this decision, and I ultimately decided to work for a couple of years and then head to graduate school.

Don't Assume Your Way Out of a Job

It's a tough time for America and for America's workforce. We may be a little distracted and a lot frightened by what we see and hear. But in order to stay successful in the long-run, we can't overreact to the news. Just because some companies are announcing downsizing, don't assume you will be cut. Just the same, do not assume that your supervisors know what you have accomplished, what you are working on, or even what your primary responsibilities entail. Most managers should be regularly reminded about what you have achieved. This applies whether the company has 100 employees or 10,000.
